Youth Rugby starts its 5th Season here! For 2011 South River Youth Athletics continues the successful touch RUGBY program for boys and girls age 6-14 begun in Edgewater in 2007!
- Don’t know how to play? We’ll teach you! No experience necessary--the point of the program is to teach the sport and develop young players.
- Who & where do you play? We play against other clubs in the Potomac Rugby Union Youth League (PRUYL), including four other clubs in Anne Arundel County: Cape St Claire, Arden, Linthicum, & Severna Park.
- When do we play? Matches are scheduled on Saturday mornings and a few Thursday evenings from mid-June through July. The state-wide end-of-season tournament will be on July 30th & 31st at South River High School.
- What about practice? We’ll start out with one-hour practices from 7-8pm and work up to 7-8:30 as the team builds stamina. Practice will be Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from May 23rd through the end of July at our home pitch (field) at Edgewater Park.
- What’s RUGBY like? It started when a frustrated soccer player at Rugby College in England picked up the ball and ran with it! Eventually, American football grew out of rugby—but rugby doesn’t stop for downs like football does, and players aren’t stuck at a position where they can’t score. In rugby, EVERYONE gets to run with the ball and SCORE!
- Are girls and boys on separate teams? No, the teams in this league are co-ed. Because this is Touch Rugby, size and gender aren’t significant factors.
- What about age groups? Age divisions will depend on enrollment. We could have as many as a U-15, U-13, U-11, and U-9, but may have 10 and younger on a U-11 side and 14 and younger on a U-15 side. We’ll all practice together, and split up for some of the skill games we’ll play at practice.
- What do I need? Shorts, socks, cleats (without toe cleat) and a mouth guard.

- Seahawks Rugby has teams for players starting at 8 and up to 19 years of age.
- SRYA Seahawk's home field is at Edgewater Park.
- South River Youth Athletics Rugby is played in collaboration with Anne Arundel Youth Rugby (plAAY Rugby!) under the auspices of the Potomac Rugby Union (www.pru.org) and Anne Arundel County Recreation & Parks, (www.aacounty.org/RecParks/sports).
