How to Set Up a soccer field:

Start by drawing sidelines and endlines

• Start with side line or end line that is limited by obstruction or area (e.g. tree line, fence, or edge of grass area).
• Use measuring tape to measure that line, paint the line, and make marks for other lines (corner arc, edge of goal box, edge of penalty box, midfield, egdge of goals, etc). See list for different field sizes below.
• Layout 90 degree angle for an adjacent side or end line using a 3-4-5 triangle
  • Start at the end of the line just laid out--i.e. a corner of the field.
  • First, stake the end of a measuring tape to the corner.
  • Use measuring tape to measure a length of 40') back along the line and pin the tape with a second stake.
  • Continue with the tape and cut across the corner of the field with the measuring tape for a length of 50' (original 40' + 50' = 90' mark on the tape).
  • Temporarily use a third stake, to hold the 90' mark at a spot where you think it is 90 degrees from the corner of the field.
  • Measure back to the original corner a distance of 30' (second mark of 90' + 30' = 120').
  • Use the first stake to pin the 120' measurement at corner of the field (along with the beginning of the tape.
  • Move the third stake to make the 50' side and 30' side taught.
  • Once the 3-4-5 triangle is alligned the, 3rd stake is 90 degrees from the corner and can be used to align the line adjacent to the first marked line.
